Ischaemic Heart Disease


 This is a condition of lack of oxygen supply to the heart , with consequent altered cardiac function. Actually lack of oxygen in coronary circulation.

A few words on coronary circulation:-

 The right coronary artery arises from the right sinus of Valsalva and passes in the right atrioventricular groove to supply the right ventricle, part of the interventricular septum and the inferior part of the left ventricle, a branch supplies the AV node. The left coronary arises from the left sinus and divides into an anterior descending branch which supplies part of the septum and the anterior and apical parts of the heart and the circumflex branch which passes in the left arterioventricular groove and supplies the lateral and posterior surfaces of the heart.

Causes:-

(a)Atheriosclerosis - the most common cause

(b)Arterisclerosis

(c)Polyarteritis nodosa

(d)Coronary vasospasm

(e)Coronary embolism from various causes

(f)Hypertension

(g)Hyperlipidaemia

(h)Cigarette smoking

(i)Obesity

(j)Diabetes mellitus

Clinical features:-

(a)Ischaemic cardiac pain:- Angina pectoris. Pain located commonly in the middle or upper sternal region and left chest. Character of the pain is constricting, squeezing, pressing or crushing type. Pain radiates commonly along the left shoulder, upper arm, upto elbow, wrist and even fingers, sometimes pain radiate to the neck , upper jaw and back.

(b)Intermediate coronary syndrome or acute coronary failure.

(c)Myocardial infarction:- Pain like angina pectoris. Breathlessness, cough, flood tinged sputum may occur sometimes. Nausea and vomiting. Sometimes the limbs are cold , severe sweating, restlessness. Fever rises upto 100o to 103oF.

(d)Patient may look pale and anxious.

(e)Pulse rate may be increased

(f)Systolic blood pressure may be little elevated.

(g)Sudden death.

Treatment:-

After completing the case-taking and investigating the ECG , selective coronary angiography and radio-isotope study and examining the patient the treatment starts.

Homoeopathic medicines:-

Here I am giving the name of some homoeopathic medicines which are usually prescribed in the case of this disease according to the physical signs and symptoms as usually observed in the case of this disease. However it must be borne in our mind that apart from the physical symptoms there are also some mental symptoms associated with this disease for which I have not mentioned any medicine here. Here medicines are not found in large numbers. Few medicines which act on the cardiac muscle and at the same time cover the total patient. Here a few medicines are given which are more effective such as:-

(i)Amyl nitrite

(ii)Cactus grandiflorus

(iii)Crataegus oxycantha

(iv)Phosphorus

(v)Spongia tosta, etc.

Yogapathic treatment:-

Morning and evening walking in fresh open air is most effective. Many asanas are effective, amongst them the following asanas are essential such as:-

(i)Sitali pranayama

(ii)Sadharan pranayama

(iii)Suryavedana pranayama

(iv)Jasthiasana

(v)Bajrasana ,etc.

Meditation:-

The patient must at first do some Pranayama before starting to meditate. The patient must meditate early in the morning and before going to bed for 30 minutes.

3. Take skimmed milk, whey, curd

4. Take rice and pulses

5.Take bread and margarines

6. Take sweet and sour fruits

7. Take sunflower oil

8. Take soyabin oil

9. Take olive oil

10. Take mustard oil

11. Take groundnut oil

12. Take rice-bran oil

13. Take sea-fish and oily fish

14. Avoid animal fat of beef, meat, pork

15. Avoid sugar and sweets

16. Avoid cake, pastry , ice-cream

17. Avoid whole milk

18. Avoid smoking and alcohol

19. Avoid butter, curd

20. Avoid coconut oil,banaspati oil and ghee

20. Avoid bread, margarines and butter
